Japan Powder Gear Review: What I’m Skiing on the Alpinr World Tour
By Michael Matthews – Owner, Backpacker Outdoors
Japan has been on my ski list for decades, and kicking off the Alpinr World Tour here has been everything I hoped it would be. The snow in Niseko is unlike anywhere else in the world—light, deep, and incredibly consistent. When you’re skiing in conditions like this, the gear you bring matters.
Over the years I’ve tested a lot of equipment, but for this trip I focused on reliable, lightweight gear that performs in deep powder and changing mountain weather. Most of the gear I brought with me comes from brands we trust and carry at Backpacker Outdoors, particularly Arc’teryx, which continues to set the standard for alpine performance.
Below is a breakdown of the gear that has been performing exceptionally well in Japan so far.
Shell Protection for Japan’s Constant Snow

Japan storms can roll in quickly, and staying dry is critical when you’re skiing deep powder all day.
Two of the most important pieces I brought with me are:
-
Arc’teryx Sabre Jacket
-
Arc’teryx Sabre Bib Pant
Both pieces are built with GORE-TEX protection, which is essential when you’re skiing in constant snowfall. What I love about this setup is that it keeps moisture out without overheating on longer runs or hikes.
The Sabre system is designed specifically for freeride skiing, which makes it ideal for the terrain we’re skiing here in Japan.
Layering for Cold Powder Days
One of the biggest mistakes people make skiing in Japan is overdressing. Because the snow is so dry, temperatures can feel colder than expected, but if you're hiking or skiing aggressively you’ll heat up fast.
The layering system I’ve been using includes:
Arc’teryx Midlayers
-
Lightweight insulated midlayer
-
Breathable fleece layer for touring
-
Moisture-wicking base layer
This combination allows me to adjust throughout the day depending on wind, snowfall, or whether we’re hiking terrain.
Arc’teryx does an excellent job balancing warmth, breathability, and mobility, which is exactly what you want when skiing powder.
Why Arc’teryx Works So Well for Ski Travel

When you’re traveling internationally for skiing, gear reliability becomes even more important.
The pieces I brought on this trip needed to meet a few requirements:
• Lightweight for travel
• Durable for long expeditions
• Weatherproof for unpredictable mountain conditions
• Versatile enough for multiple ski environments
Arc’teryx consistently checks all those boxes. Whether you’re skiing Japan, the Rockies, or the Alps, it’s gear you can trust.
That’s exactly why we carry it at Backpacker Outdoors.
